Shopping for baby products in Japan is generally straightforward, but reading Japanese labels can be a challenge. This guide explains the most common baby products you'll find in Japanese stores and what to look for.
Diapers (おむつ)
Japan produces some of the world's highest-quality diapers. Major brands include:
- Merries (メリーズ) — known for softness and breathability
- Pampers (パンパース) — widely available, good for sensitive skin
- Moony (ムーニー) — popular for newborns
Sizes are marked by weight: S (4–8kg), M (6–11kg), L (9–14kg), XL (12–17kg).
Baby Formula (粉ミルク)
If you're formula feeding, Japanese formula is of excellent quality. Common brands:
- Meiji Hohoemi (明治ほほえみ)
- Morinaga Hagukumi (森永はぐくみ)
- Wakodo Gungunbaby (和光堂ぐんぐん)

Baby Food (離乳食)
Japan has an extensive range of jarred and pouched baby food available from around 5–6 months. Look for:
- Stage indicators on packaging (5ヶ月, 7ヶ月, etc. = months)
- Allergen information listed clearly on the label
Baby Bath Products
Baby wash and shampoo are available at all drugstores. Look for products labeled akachan you (赤ちゃん用) meaning "for babies." Popular brands include Pigeon (ピジョン) and Arau Baby (アラウベビー).
